Guitar Group

The aim of the group

The aim of the group is to provide an enjoyable and inexpensive opportunity for playing guitar in a group of like minded people.

A little history

The group was started about halfway through the first decade of the twenty-first century by Dr Geoff Walden.  For most of its existence, it has functioned from a room in the Australian Institute of Country Music building but actually started in the Mary St building now occupied by Skill Centered.

Over the years, a number of experienced musicians have volunteered their time to share knowledge, experience and skills with members who have joined the group to develop their skills in a supportive environment.

At present we have a very experienced group of musicians in the form of Robyn Hamilton, Chris Minter, Glenn Fox and Geoff Walden who offer leadership and support for those who attend the weekly sessions.

When do we get together

The guitar group sessions are on Monday evenings from 5.30pm until 8.30pm.

Where do we meet

The group meets in the classroom at the Australian Institute of Country Music (AICM) building in Channon St Gympie,  next to the old Police Station.

Costs involved

There are no membership fees but there is a cost per session of $5 per person.

How the group sessions work

The guitar groups sessions are made special by all of the people who attend.  And the fact that we have access to the equipment (drums, PA system, video projector) and the people to use it all professionally makes our sessions extra special.

Most social guitarists don’t have the opportunity of playing in a group that includes a rhythm section consisting of professional musicians such as Glenn Fox on drums and Chris Minter on bass guitar.  These two guys make it all worth while.

Without vocals, Monday night sessions would be less than interesting.  So with words and chords projected for all to see, anyone and everyone can partake in singing if and as they wish.

Where possible new musical concepts are explained and demonstrated with members encouraged to improve their skills.

A typical Monday night session goes like this:

5.30 – 6.30pm

This is the time when we take care of those who are beginners.  New members are given one on one tuition to get them started while the group plays easier songs to give more advanced beginner players the opportunity of working with the group (usually 3 chord songs).

6.30 – 7.00pm

We move on to songs that are a little more complicated

7.00 – 8.30pm

We usually try to have a new song each week and this is the time that this is introduced.  They can each be of varying difficulty but generally we try to introduce new concepts which are designed to improve the standard of playing.

If you are interested you can contact via the contact details page on this website OR just turn up on Monday night. There is no commitment to attend, just do so when you can and want to.
